Land of Falling Water

Cumberland County Tennessee and surrounding area's offer some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Tennessee and the U.S. Since moving to Tennessee in 1998 I made it a point to travel and discover the wonderful falling water beauty of the Tennessee waterfalls. The falls listed I have personally visited and can offer a few tips and advice on travel and hiking difficulty. These falls are all located in or within two hours of Cumberland County. Spend a few hours exploring the awesome nature of Tennessee and feel rejuvenated for weeks. There are so many benefits to being one with nature and taking in all the abundance of natural beauty Tennessee has to offer. So get out there and explore middle Tennessee Land of Falling Water.

VIRGIN FALLS: Located in Sparta, Tennessee. In Virgin Falls pocket wilderness in Scott's Gulf. This 317-acre preserve is an eight mile round trip hike about six hours. Hiking conditions are mild to medium. I have hiked out early in the morning around 7am and returned back to the parking area around 3pm. I took my time and spent two hours having a picnic at the falls base. These amazing falls have no surface water to the falls or away from it. The mysterious falls emerges from a cave, drops over a 110-foot cliff and disappears into a cave at the bottom of the falls. Virgin falls is perfect for backpackers, day hikers and overnight campers. Pass several creeks during your hike, caves and smaller waterfalls.

Location: 11 miles E of Sparta on Hwy. 70 East. S on Eastland Rd 8 Miles. then 2 miles on Scott Gulf Road.

FALL CREEK FALLS: Only 30 miles south of Sparta, Tennessee you will find Fall creek falls State park and Fall creek falls. These Gorgeous falls descend at 256 feet. The tallest waterfall in the southeast. When I visit this majestic display of Tennessee falling water I also enjoy bike rentals at the state park and explore several trails with gorges and cascade views and five other waterfalls. Sign up for a tour of the park, stay the night in a cozy cabin, go fishing or boating while you visit one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tennessee.

Location: 2009 Village Camp Road  |  Rt. 3 Box 300
Pikeville , TN 37367-9803  |  Office: 423-881-5298

BURGESS FALLS: These falls located in Burgess falls state park in Cookeville, TN. Are a regular hiking spot for me, my family and friends. I can walk the complete loop in a brisk walk in 20 minutes. The hiking conditions are mild to rugged. Visit smaller falls on your way to the spraying mist of the majestic 130 foot Burgess Falls located on the falling water river. Hike to the bottom of the falls and enjoy a dip in the clear natural pools or fish in the tail waters of center hill lake. I also love to walk up river, skip along the rocks and enjoy several mini falls and clear slow running water. Burgess falls is a must see.

Location: From i-40, take exit 286. Turn South off the 286 ramp onto State Hwy 135. Proceed on Hwy 135 for 7 miles following the signs to the park.

GREAT FALLS: Are the first falls I visited when I first came to Tennessee. I was so amazed at the many several small falls falling into one. Cascading 110-feet. into  an imposing sandstone gorge in Caney creek river. The best part is hiking to the bottom when waters are down and exploring the river floor while being sprayed with the falling breeze. There are nine miles of overlook hiking, blue hole view and a natural sand beach. I enjoy staying the weekend in the beautiful cabins Rock Island has to offer. Enjoy fishing, camping and boat rentals. All this beauty located right here in middle TN.

Location: 82 Beach Road
Rock Island , TN 38581-4200

Crossville's very own Cheese & Gourmet House.

This is one of my favorite shops in Crossville. Simonton's Cheese & Gourmet House. Located at 2278 Hwy 127 South. When I first visited the Gourmet House I was greeted with smiles and hospitality, what a charming little place. Stroll through this unique haven and sample a large variety of gorgeous tasting gourmet cheeses and crunchy crackers. Taste some yummy sauces, dips, dressings and jellies. Simonton's also offers gourmet coffees, cakes, cookies and candies. This is naming only a few of the unique gifts and treats you can experience and purchase. When I first visited the lovely shop I was on my way to take my pooches for a hike at Cumberland mountain state park. The owner and staff noticed my pups, they gave me several treats for them as well. The store also features a wall full of pictures dedicated to their customers pets. Visit their website at http://www.simontonscheese.com/and also discover the history of this Crossville family shop that was established in 1947. If you live in Crossville, relocating or just visiting, this is a must stop location. Also try cheeses best friend wine at one of Crossvill'es fine wineries.  Visit Simonton's Cheese & Gourmet House!

Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION: Don't you just love this show! I hardly have time for television or I choose not to watch very often but every now and then a really good show, worthy of watching comes to surface. My Mother asked me if I had seen this show and of course I had not. I tuned in one Sunday evening and I was hooked. One of the greatest feelings in life is the feeling of helping others and doing good by them. This program and organization truly helps those in need and deserving of a home and life makeover. What is really cool is that you can visit the site and recommend a family for this program. Some of the shows that I have really enjoyed included a family who lost their home in Louisiana from hurricane Katrina, a war hero who lost his leg fighting for our safety and freedom and a blind and disabled college student who got the handicap friendly home he desperately needed. If you know of a family who would fit into the Extreme Makeover Home Edition category, Visit the site link above.

Organic weeding tip for (Organic Gardeners ' Group)

When it comes to Planting season and the thoughts of veggies, flowers and herbs - makes me feel a lot like Tigger in photo at left!  Easy Garden Building

Use old newspapers to create a no-dig garden plot. Start by deciding the boundaries of the area chosen for the new garden. Those interested in tidy borders may want to frame the area with a garden hose while building. Next, start piling the newspapers over the plot. Pile the newspapers about 10 sheets thick and overlap them, so there are no holes for errant weeds or blades of grass to sneak through. Use bricks or other weights to keep the newspapers in place, especially on windy days.

Next, cover the newspapers completely with a mixture of topsoil and compost. The topsoil mixture should be at least two inches thick. Remove the weights and rake the soil evenly over the plot. Finally, water the area completely. A few months later, it will be easy to set down plants in the loamy soil and both seeds and plants will grow strong in the rich, fertile plot.

I wanted to create this blog for MARY BOWENS Group ORGANIC GARDENERS  (Love her idea for this!)  As most of us try to go green, organic gardening is another great way to do our part! If we all did the little things it would make a big impact. I first started using newspapers last year and what a difference it makes. A greener approach than the typical dangerous weed killer sprays and way better than pulling the weeds up daily. "although weeding can be very therapeutic!" Spring is just around the corner. YA!
